Hi friends! Ever feel like your home just isn't quite there yet? Like it's missing that certain something? I've been there! That's why I use a simple little formula that can transform a space from 'blah' to 'bam!' It's called C.R.A.P., and it's easier than you think. Intrigued? Let's dive in!

C is for Colour (and Curtains!):
Colour is the quickest way to inject personality and mood into your home. Don't be afraid to experiment! A fresh coat of paint can completely revitalize a room. Consider a wallpapered accent wall or even painting a piece of furniture for a quick and easy update. Even if you're rocking rental-friendly neutral walls, you've got tons of options! Use those soft whites, warm greys, or subtle blushes as your canvas, and then let your personality shine with pops of colour through accessories. Think throw pillows, blankets, vases, and even artwork.
Now, let's talk about the other "C"! Curtains aren't just for privacy; they're a design essential! They can add softness, texture, and even make your windows (and your room!) look bigger. Here's the trick: hang your curtain rod higher and wider than the actual window frame. This creates the illusion of larger windows and makes your room feel more spacious. But how high and how wide? Ideally, aim for the rod to be 4-6 inches wider on each side of the window, and at least 4-6 inches above the window frame (or even closer to the ceiling for a more dramatic effect). For length, floor-length curtains are generally the most stylish and elongating, skimming the floor by about ½ inch. Choose lightweight fabrics that let in plenty of natural light, and don't be afraid to play with patterns and colours.

R is for Rugs:
Rugs are the unsung heroes of interior design. They define spaces, add warmth and texture, and can even be a statement piece in their own right. But size matters! Choosing the right rug size is crucial for creating a balanced and harmonious space. Here's a quick guide:
Living Room: Your rug should be large enough to anchor your furniture grouping. Ideally, all the front legs of your sofa and armchairs should sit on the rug. If that's not possible, make sure at least the front legs are on the rug. Leave about 18 inches of bare floor around the rug.
Dining Room: The rug should be large enough so that all the chairs can sit on it, even when pulled out from the table. Add about 24 inches to the width and length of your dining table to determine the minimum rug size.
Bedroom: For a queen-size bed, a 5x7 or 8x10 rug is a good starting point. You can place the rug under the bed so it extends past the sides, or you can place two smaller rugs on either side of the bed.
Area Rug over Carpet: Yes, it's a thing! Choose a rug with a low pile (like a flatweave or a low-pile shag) to avoid a bulky look. Make sure the rug is large enough to anchor your furniture grouping and that the colours complement the existing carpet. This works especially well to define a seating area in a large, carpeted room.
Rug Layering: This is a fantastic way to add visual interest and create a cozy, layered look. Start with a larger, neutral rug as your base (like a jute or sisal rug), and then layer a smaller, more colourful or patterned rug on top. Make sure the top rug is significantly smaller than the base rug to create a clear distinction. You can even play with different textures – a fluffy sheepskin throw layered over a woven rug can be incredibly chic!

A is for Art:
Art is personal. It's a reflection of your taste and style. Don't be afraid to mix and match different styles, sizes, and mediums. Create a gallery wall with a collection of your favourite prints, or hang a large statement piece to make a focal point. But how do you choose the right size? Here are some tips:
Consider the Wall: A large, empty wall can handle a larger piece of art, while a smaller wall might look better with a smaller piece or a grouping of smaller pieces.
Scale it to the Furniture: If you're hanging art above a sofa or other piece of furniture, make sure the art is proportional to the furniture. A good rule of thumb is that the art should be about two-thirds the width of the furniture.
Eye Level is Key: Hang art at eye level. This is generally considered to be about 57-60 inches from the floor.
Don't forget about framing! The right frame can elevate even a simple print. Want to create a gallery wall? Thrifting is your secret weapon! Hit up your local thrift stores to find a mix-and-match collection of frames. A little spray paint will tie them all together beautifully. And remember, art doesn't have to be expensive. You can find affordable prints online, or even create your own!

P is for Plants:
Plants bring life and energy into your home. They add a touch of nature and can even purify the air. Don't have a green thumb? No problem! There are plenty of low-maintenance plants that are perfect for beginners. Think succulents, snake plants, or even a ZZ plant. Place plants strategically around your home to add pops of green and create a calming atmosphere. Don't be afraid to play with different pot sizes and styles – they can be just as decorative as the plants themselves!
So, there you have it! When in doubt, add some C.R.A.P. – a simple formula that can transform your space. Remember, decorating your home should be fun! Don't be afraid to experiment, play with different styles, and most importantly, create a space that you truly love. Happy decorating!
